Night Light Of Minot Light In Cohasset, MA With Passing Steamship

Cohasset, MA - Minot Light With Passing Steamship Night Light

$ 25.00

    Minot Ledge Light sits atop a dangerous ledge about a mile off of Cohasset and Scituate on Boston's South Shore. Often photographed in calmer waters, (including many such images on this site) it's depicted here in rough seas with a late-nineteenth century steamer in the distance making headway for Boston Light and the security of Boston's Outer Harbor.
    In November of 1898, a terrible storm struck and The Steamer Portland and all its passengers were lost. The storm would forever be known as "The Great Portland Gale" and take its place as one of the most fearsome storms New England has ever seen.
    Steamship travel never really recovered from the loss and the relative safety of rail transportation to most coastal towns and cities meant the heyday of the great coastal steamships for anything more than just a ferry ride was all but over.
