NY - Fire Island Lighthouse At Night - Night Light

$ 25.00

Fire Island Light was completed in 1858 on the site of its predecessor which was built in 1826. It has a focal plane 168 feet above sea level, is visible for 20 miles at sea and is often the first sighting of land for New York bound ships.

The light's many keepers over nearly two centuries present a colorful mixture of heroes and scoundrels. The light's Fresnel lens is from the nearby Shinnecock Lighthouse which was decommissioned in 1933.

The U. S. Coast Guard decommissioned the lFire Island Light in 1974 and the Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society has since raised over a million dollars to restore and refurbish the light. It remains an active aid to maritime navigation.

This gorgeous hand-tinted image shown here as a night light dates from around 1880 and is almost a work of art in itself. It makes an ideal gift for anyone familiar with this beautiful part of Long Island.
