The majestic yachts found moored in Edgartown's harbor each summer are far from its most important legacy. Cat-boat sailing by young skippers first learning their tiller from their boom has been a part of this harbor's history for over a century.
The Edgartown Yacht Club's programs, along with their counterparts in the town's public school system ensure that generations of new sailors will learn the art and experience the joy of navigating a small sail boat in the town's beautiful and safe harbor waters.
The early cat boats shown here are little changed from the crafts boys and girls push away from the dock in these days. And while today's young sailors may not wear such adorable sailor suits, you can bet the gear they do wear will be designed to actually get wet.
