The Rainbow Fleet is comprised of easy to handle boats, each a version of a well-known 19th Century craft known as the Beetle Cat.
Designed by New Bedford's John Beetle, the larger size of these shallow draft, gaff-rigged boats were used in Nantucket in the winters by both fishermen and scallopers.
A smaller set of the boats were brought to Nantucket in the 1920s by the Nantucket Yacht Club to create a sailing and racing program for the club's younger members.
The boats are solid, have a shallow draft and are extremely easy to handle subsequently they became a favorite for summer sailors on the island, not just to learn on, but to sail directly up onto sandy beaches for picnics and other summer diversions.
The Beetle Cat is still being built today and can be ordered to the exact same specifications from Beetle, Inc. in Warhead, MA.
