Straight Wharf in Nantucket Harbor was built in 1723 by Richard Macy, a member of one of the first white families on the island. It was probably created out of logs and sand, but we do know it led directly to State Street.
Three other wharves would soon follow as the Whaling industry's importance on the island grew and the need to connect whale oil and other goods with the warehouses that would store them.
Sail lofts, chandelries and cooperages (where barrels were made) would soon follow. Numerous fires have destroyed much of the original buildings and now restaurants, hotels, and tourist shops make up the better part of Straight Wharf.
