Cape Lookout Light alerts mariners to the treacherous Lookout Shoals, twenty miles offshore in the part of the coast known as "The Graveyard of The Atlantic."
It's the fourth light to stand at or near this location. The first was built in 1812. Its the only light in the US with day marks that help determine direction.
Confederate soldiers attempted to blow it up during The Civil War but were unsuccessful.
The light is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore and can only be accessed by private ferry.
