Cape May Lighthouse at Night - Cape May, NJ Night Light
The current and third Cape May Lighthouse shown here was built in 1859 after two earlier lights succumbed to erosion. It is 157 feet, 6 inches tall and there are 199 steps to the top via a winding cast-iron staircase that's an adventure in itself to navigate.
The light is now owned by The State of New Jersey and remains an active aid to navigation. It's open to the public and presents those intrepid enough to climb to the top, an unsurpassed view of the Jersey Shore and Wildwood to the north, The Delaware Bay to the west, Cape Henlopen, Delaware to the south, and the Atlantic to the east.
The grounds are also a major bird sanctuary and a key stopping point along the Atlantic Flyway for a variety of rara avis. A museum on the grounds offers wonderful exhibits detailing the rich history of this icon of the Jersey Shore.
