Montauk Light was the first lighthouse in the State of New York and is the 4th oldest lighthouse in the United States. It stands on the eastern tip of Long Island and projects a beam 18 nautical miles out to sea.
The beacon was located to help ships navigate to the southern side of Long Island in their approach to New York Harbor and it is now automated.
The light is a National Historic Landmark and is currently owned by the Montauk Historical Society. Cliff erosion continues to threaten its future and numerous attempts to stabilize its base have failed to secure its long-term outlook.
