RI - Watch Hill Light Night Light
Watch Hill, Rhode Island, a village of nearby Westerly, Rhode Island, acquired its name from the beacon and lookout that were stationed there in the Colonial era.
Its location atop a natural promontory offers a sparkling view of Narragansett Bay on a clear day and its light offers an important warning to approaching ships of the dangerous reef to the southwest.
Watch Hill has for over a century been a playground for the rich and famous who have enjoyed the light's picturesque nature in the four months of the year when the resort is active.
It's in the other months of the year that Watch Hill Light has either endured direct hits from epic hurricanes (The Great Hurricane of 1938 and Hurricane Carol) or witnessed tragic shipwrecks (The Metis and The Parchment) unfold within reach of its beam.
