Whaling Bark Kathleen - Stove In By a Whale Night Light
Most students of Melville's Moby Dick know that the attack on the ship was based on a a similar attack by a Sperm Whale on a Whaler named The Essex. The old whaler's adage was ' dead whale or a stove boat' "stove" meaning to break apart or smash in the smaller whale boats that left the ship to capture the whale.
In this instance, a large Bull whale charged the ship and rammed it as a deck hand up in the spars warned his shipmates to no avail. His account is as follows:
"Instead of the whale going down or going to windward as they usually do, he kept coming directly for the ship only much faster than he was coming before he was darted at...."
"He struck the ship forward of the mizzen rigging and about five or six feet under water. It shook the ship considerably when he struck her."
The ship began taking on water and all hands and passengers loaded onto the whale boats with bread and water. Five minutes later, The Bark Kathleen slipped beneath the waves. All hands were picked up by a steamer not long thereafter.
